Vision and role
Good Governance Africa (GGA) is a research and advocacy think tank. Our vision is: An Africa where citizens are empowered, governments are effective, businesses thrive, poverty is eradicated, and GGA is the pre-eminent partner for advancing good governance.
As an intern at GGA, you will be part of the Natural Resource Governance & Climate Change (NRGCC) Programme, which aims to mainstream social performance in the extractives industries and integrate environmental, social and governance principles to advance inclusive economic development. Your role will be to support the team in a variety of tasks including secondary data collection and analysis relating to the NRGCC programme’s research work. The position will be based in Johannesburg. Travel will occasionally be required.
Role and responsibilities:
- Conduct literature reviews on relevant resource governance and climate change issues. A special focus on Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) frameworks, integration methods and comparative legal analysis.
- Assist with data collection and analysis for commissioned research, policy briefings & intelligence reports.
- Support and contribute to existing commissioned research projects.
- Provide input on the NRGCC programme’s impact by reporting stakeholder feedback to enhance monitoring and evaluation.
- Present on relevant resource governance issues.
- Participate in relevant conferences, workshops, seminars and events.
- Monitor the social media presence that the organisation and programme maintain.
- Cultivate relevant partner relationships to enhance the NRGCC programme’s reach through developing networks with key stakeholders in the governance space.
- Assist in organising and co-managing dissemination events pertaining to NRGCC research.
- Provide monthly activity reports to the Head of Programme.
- Participate in quarterly performance reviews to identify key areas of growth and development.
Key skills and knowledge required:
- Honours Degree or equivalent in political science, law, economics, public policy, and international relations.
- Understanding of extractives industries challenges within Africa and globally.
- Knowledge of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards and integration methods.
- Ability to conduct literature reviews, summarise key findings and develop research frameworks.
- Strong analytical skills to assess policy documents, reports, and natural resource management and development trends.
- Excellent researching and writing skills.
- Keen interest in resource governance, climate change & ESG performance.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines timeously.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- No prior work experience required.
