Professor David Benatar reviews Dr Max Price’s Price, Max. Statues and Storms: Leading Through Change (Tafelberg, 2023). The book recounts Max Price’s experiences as vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT) during the turbulent “Fallist” years of 2015 to 2017. It describes how protesters shut down the university, engaging in intimidation, assault, and arson. Price and other members of the university administration faced verbal abuse and physical assault, while the university faced threats to its physical infrastructure. The book portrays Price’s decisions as reasonable, although Benatar, another former UCT insider, disagrees. The reviewer provides insight into why he believes Price’s decisions though well-intentioned, were erroneous.
