Good Governance Africa (GGA) extends its deepest condolences to the family of Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash on Monday, 10 June 2024, at the age of 51. We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of his fellow passengers.

President Lazarus Chakwera called the plane crash a “terrible tragedy.” Chilima served as Vice President of Malawi from 2014 to 2019 and again from 2020 until his death. He leaves behind his wife, Mary Chilima, and two children.

Chilima’s dedication to Malawi and tireless efforts to improve the lives of its citizens have left an indelible mark on the country, and he will be sorely missed.

He strongly advocated for the transformative potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Africa. In his book, The Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Africa’s Sustainable and Inclusive Development: Understanding the Capacity Challenges, Chilima highlighted Africa’s potential to enhance technology and use it to break poverty cycles. He argued that making ICT more affordable, accessible, and user-friendly would enhance Africa’s capacity and eradicate poverty.

Chilima also championed the fight against food insecurity and malnutrition. We will remember him for his active involvement in improving food security through organisations such as the International Food Policy Research Institute.

His commitment to economic reform and social development in Malawi played a pivotal role in modernising infrastructure, enhancing education, and eradicating poverty.

We stand with Chilima’s family and friends and all Malawian citizens who felt the impact of his extraordinary life in this difficult time. We will remember and cherish his dedication, integrity, and visionary leadership. May his soul rest in peace.
